What is Ikiguru?
Ikiguru is a career guidance and decision-support app built for Indian students aged 13 to 18. It helps students explore careers, academic streams, entrance exams, degrees, and colleges so they can make informed choices about their future.
Ikiguru is operated by Ikiguru Technology Private Limited, a company registered in India with its office in Gurgaon, Haryana.
Why we are writing to you
Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act), anyone under 18 years of age is treated as a child. We are required to get your verifiable consent before we collect or use your child's personal data.
This notice tells you, in plain language:
- What information we collect from your child.
- Why we collect it and how we use it.
- Who we share it with.
- What your rights are, as a parent or guardian.
- How to give, change, or withdraw consent, and how to reach us if you have concerns.
You should read this notice together with our full Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service, both available within the app and at ikiguru.com. This notice is meant to make those documents easier to understand, but it does not replace them.
What information we collect
When your child uses Ikiguru, we collect:
- Your child's name, age or date of birth, email, and (optionally) mobile number.
- Academic information your child enters — class, stream, subjects, interests, saved careers and colleges.
- Information about the device and how the app is used (device type, app version, features used, crash reports, approximate city or state).
- If your child uses any AI feature we offer in future (such as the "Counsellor AI"): the questions, prompts, and responses exchanged with the AI.
We also collect information about you (the parent or guardian) — your name, email or mobile number, your relationship to the student, and a record of the consent you give. We use this only to verify and document your consent and to contact you about your child's account.
What we do NOT collect
- We do not collect Aadhaar numbers, PAN, government ID photos, or biometric data from students.
- We do not collect precise GPS location.
- We do not access your child's contacts, SMS, photos, microphone, or camera (except if your child chooses to upload a profile picture).
- We do not show advertising to children. We do not use your child's data to build advertising profiles. We do not sell your child's data to anyone.
How we use your child's information
- To run your child's Ikiguru account.
- To show career, stream, exam, degree, and college information that is relevant to your child.
- To respond to support requests and questions.
- To send transactional messages (such as a verification email or an OTP).
- To keep the app safe, secure, and working properly.
- To improve our content and features (using overall, aggregated patterns, not individual profiles).
- To meet our legal obligations.
Parental consent — how it works
When your child signs up and tells us they are under 18, we ask them for your email address or mobile number. We then send you a verification message that explains what we are asking for and gives you a one-time code or link to confirm. Your child's account is only fully activated after you confirm.
We keep a record of your consent — what you consented to, when, and how — so that we can show, if asked, that consent was properly given.
You can give granular consent. For example, you can allow your child to use Ikiguru without agreeing to receive product update emails from us, or (if and when AI features are offered) without enabling any AI feature.
Important: You can change your mind at any time, for any reason, without needing to explain why.
Your rights as a parent or guardian
As the parent or legal guardian of a child using Ikiguru, you have the right to:
- Access — see what personal data we hold about your child.
- Correct — ask us to fix anything that is wrong or out of date.
- Delete — ask us to delete your child's data and close the account.
- Withdraw consent — at any time, for any specific use we asked you about.
- Restrict — tell us to stop using your child's data for a specific purpose.
- Receive a copy — ask for a copy of the data we have.
- Complain — escalate to us, or to the Data Protection Board of India if you are not satisfied with our response.
To exercise any of these rights, the easiest way is to open the Ikiguru app and go to Settings → Privacy & Data → For Parents, where you can see and manage everything in one place. You can also write to us at hello@ikiguru.com from the email address you used to give consent.
We will respond as quickly as we can — and in any case within the timelines required under the DPDP Act.
How long we keep the data
- We keep your child's account data for as long as the account is active.
- If the account is inactive for 24 months in a row, we will notify you and then delete or anonymise the data.
- If you ask us to delete the account, we will delete or anonymise the personal data within 30 days, except for things we are legally required to keep (for example, payment and tax records, or the record of your consent itself).
- We keep the record of your consent for the life of the account plus 7 years, so that we can show that consent was properly obtained, if a regulator or court ever asks.
How we keep the data safe
We use industry-standard security measures to protect your child's data, including encryption in transit, access controls for our team, monitoring, and secure development practices. We also require our partners to maintain similar safeguards. No system is ever completely safe, but we take the safety of children's data very seriously.
If we ever discover a personal data breach affecting your child, we will inform you and the Data Protection Board of India as required by law.
Ikiguru is not a counsellor
Please remember:
- Ikiguru gives information and decision-support. It does not replace a qualified human counsellor, teacher, or you as a parent.
- Any AI feature we may offer in future (such as the "Counsellor AI") is an artificial intelligence assistant, not a real counsellor or doctor. It can be wrong. It should never be used for medical, psychological, legal, or emergency advice.
- Encourage your child to talk to you, their teachers, and trained professionals about big decisions. Use Ikiguru as a starting point, not the final word.
